How to unlock your inner power

What is inner power you ask? It’s one of those funny things that has different meanings to everybody, but to me it’s all about finding your whole self, being confident in that whole self and always staying true to it through your actions, not allowing the challenges that are thrown at you to knock you off course. It does not mean you never change, but it means you know how to embrace and adopt change in a way suitable for you rather than just following the crowd. It means doing things that you actually want to do, and things that make you feel all warm and fuzzy, rather than just things you think you should be doing. I had a think about the things that make me feel powerful, here’s what I came up with:

Routine

Having a solid routine really makes me feel like I have my life together. Everyone is so much busier these days and it can be hard to let the essential things slip, which is why having a routine which ensures you always make time for the most important things can really help to keep you grounded and prevent you from completely freaking out. Even down to waking up in the morning, I’ve woken up at the same time every day for as long as I can remember, I’ve always been a morning person and it works for me to get up and get in a workout before I head to the office. Even on the weekends, I may not get out of bed super early but knowing I will wake up then makes me feel in control. Having control over that small element of your day means that when you encounter something you don’t have control over, it will be so much easier to accept and let go of.

Worrying is a waste of time. You just have to keep living and not stress over what you can’t control.

Enjoy your own company

Nothing is guaranteed in life and there are people you have around you now that may not be there tomorrow for whatever reason. As morbid as it sounds, tragedies of all sorts happen everyday and power is knowing that you will be ok by yourself, maybe not forever but just for a short time. It is difficult to form solid relationships with others without being comfortable in the relationship you have with yourself, so work on that first to ensure that the additional people in your life are additions and they’re not plugging gaps in the pieces of you that are missing.

The other benefit to being comfortable in your own company is that you are so much more likely to know your own mind, to know what makes you happy and decision making becomes SO much easier. Ever had a decision to make around lots of friends and family who all try and offer advice and words of wisdom at once? It’s overwhelming and makes it much more difficult to know what you actually want. Spending time alone will help you figure that out.

You are you and that is your power.

Choose your squad wisely

That being said… no-one should be alone all the time, spending time with others is also healthy but choose wisely! They say you are the product of the 5 people you spend the most time with, so just think who those people are to you. Do you want to become like them? Look for positive influences, people who see the good in things, and people you want to learn from. Hold on to these people tight and choose to let go of those who make you feel negative or fill you with doubt.

Accept failure and own it

No-one was born to be perfect at everything. Learning takes time and your brain can only retain so much information, so why do we beat ourselves up so much when something doesn’t quite go how we planned it? Why do we set such high expectations for ourselves that we will struggle to ever meet? In order to feel powerful, release those expectations and allow yourselves to learn from whatever it was.

Sometimes things don’t work out simply because that’s not what you’re meant to be doing, and that is no bad thing. Whatever the circumstance, try not to make any rash decisions, allow yourself to reset and then go again, either at the same thing or trying something different. That failure is a life experience which is just as valuable as if you had succeeded so own it in the same way.

FAIL = First attempt in learning

Take control of your thoughts

I am no expert in mindfulness, however what I do know is how much of a difference it can make when you have control over your thoughts. That’s not to stay you can stop all thoughts completely, but knowing which ones to just let go of as soon as they come into your head means you can channel your energy into dealing only with the things that are worth your time and energy.

It means you can forget that bitchy comment you heard, that feeling of doubt you allowed to creep in, the stress when you think about your to do list and instead be grateful for the positive things you have. You have the power to choose which thoughts you allow in, and embracing this can make such a positive impact on your overall outlook.

What makes you feel powerful? I’d love to hear what you think!
